The Great Southern course is flat with just 25m elevation change over 5 kilometres.
Starting on Norman Road, participants in the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation 5K will run or walk west for 700m before turning left into Aldinga scrub. Follow the road & fire trail until you exit the scrub on to Cox Road. A section of gravel road will take you to the Aldinga Beach Caravan Park where you will turn left into the Aldinga Scrub at gate 3 along Boomerang Track.
You will then follow the sealed roads bordering the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park – Acacia Terrace, Sheoak Avenue, Kestrel Terrace, Wattle Avenue and Acacia Terrace again – back to Norman Road. There are 2 very short sections of sandy paths along this section of the course.
When you reach Norman Road you will turn right and head eastwards back to the finish line at the Aldinga Bay Surf Life Saving Club. Please run/walk within the coned section of Norman Road and follow instructions from the traffic managers at the intersection with the Esplanade.
Race start time is 11:30 am
The Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation 5K will start on Norman Road, just west of the finish chute, so as not to impede runners in other races that are already in progress. Runners should start assembling at the start line 10 minutes before race start.
Please seed yourself at the start line according to your expected finish time with quicker runners at the front and slower runners towards the rear.
A water station will be located at the start/finish area, but there will be no drink stations located on the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation 5K course.
We do not expect it to be too warm in November so please drink to thirst & be careful not to over-hydrate.
Only compostable cups made from plant-based materials will be used during the Great Southern Run Fest to minimize our impact on the environment.
Toilets will be available at the start/finish area.
The Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation 5K is open to runners and walkers and there will be no cut off time for finishing the course. A tail runner will follow the last participant around the course for safety reasons.
Please be courteous to our marshals and other volunteers. Remember that they are giving up their Sunday morning to make sure that you will enjoy your run.
ALWAYS FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY COURSE MARSHALS.
Much of the Great Southern course is run off-road. There will be two road crossings of the Esplanade controlled by accredited traffic managers.
Sections of the course are run on quiet back roads that remain open to traffic. There are no road junctions for you to negotiate but you must be vigilant for vehicles coming on or off of driveways. Always follow the instructions of course marshals, run within cones and follow the road rules.
Silver Sands beach will be open to cars on race day and has a 10 KM/H speed limit (though you may run faster if you like!). Minimal traffic is expected on the beach in May but you should remain aware of any vehicles around you.
Trophies will be awarded to the first 3 males and first 3 females place-getters in the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation 5K. Presentations will be made at the finish line as soon as the top 3 runners have finished.
